When people listen to words of increasing rates, a small area of the brain,at the back end of the temporal lobe, is activated preferentially compared to the same area on the right (green arrow).Patients who had problems with understanding what was said to them have usually damaged this area. The group of patients who had a stroke affecting the area on the left, but who were scanned after they got better, now activate the right side when listening to words(where the red arrow is). This change in functioning on the right appears to be supporting recovered speech comprehension.
