Empowerment Study

Different Strokes has agreed to assist David Hearnden in research he is undertaking as part of a social work degree. The research is concerned with the experience and extent to which people who have been disabled by a stroke and need assistance feel that the help they have had from social work or other staff has enabled them to be in control of their lives and the support they receive / received.

David is keen to get people’s experiences of being helped as well as not being helped to have this control, eg helped / not helped to access Direct Payments and social workers’ contribution to this.

If you are willing to share your experience with David, he would be grateful if you could contact him on david.hearnden@btinternet.com . You may be asked to complete a short questionnaire. All information shared will be treated in strict confidence; respondents will not be named.

David has worked in social services for many years, and believes that it is the job of social work to empower and promote the interests of service users. He suffered a near fatal haemorrhagic stroke in 1999, which left him with significant disabilities, and has experience of being empowered and disempowered by services.

We hope that you will be able to help.

Thank you.
