Thank you to everyone who has responded to my questions. I really appreciated all your comments. Just to make you laugh I was sat eating tea tonight - plaice and new potatoes and i looked at my hubby and said "this is a lovely piece of steak". I couldn't stop laughing. I should have given more of a history to my diagnosis yesterday.
I felt poorly about 18 months ago, really bad painful headache for about a week and following that i couldnt stand for long without the room spinning and sometimes it even happened when i was sitting. the only way i counteract the problem was to move position but then it came back. I'd just taken on a new role at work and I put it down to stress. Shortly after I started to get ringing in my right ear so my gp referred to ENT and the consultant diagnosed tinnitus but sent me for a routine scan to check for any tumours. The results that came back showed a bleed in my brain at the back. To cut a long story short i was referred to neurology a year later after my scan results went missing for 6 months. Last August I saw a neurologist who to put it bluntly had the bedside manner of a weasel. Before i even had chance to sit down and make introductions he told me it was highly likely id had a stroke but needed to do more tests. I was sent for a further MRI where the radiologist casually mentioned to her colleague (in front of me) that they were also looking for signs of MS. How do you keep still in a scanner at that point when all you want to do is cry. I also had an echo bubble contrast which showed I have a PFO. This was the cause of my stroke they believe. So I'm now waiting to have the hole closed but I've been told that there's no guarantee it will work. I saw my gp this week and I've just been presribed aspirin and a statin for my cholesterol. Its under debate at the moment whether this will be just until my surgery or for life. Will let them work it out.
Just one question my gp said I might be able to claim on my life insurance cos I've had a stroke - has anyone tried this and been successful or is it a fight not worth pursuing. Thank you all again for your kinds words of support - its lovely to be able to talk to people who have been through it. Kind regards.
