Yes indeed I did return to work part time, quite early after my stroke. However things did not go very well, partly due to my writing being very severely affected by the stroke and partly because when I was put on the spot, as you are constantly in maths lessons, I could not really cope. In September I applied for ill health retirement and finally this week I have been granted it. So for me going back to teaching did not work. Certainly you need to go very part time at first and only increase your hours when you are fully happy that you are coping.

Meanwhile I have to find a new outlet for myself, except that last saturday whilst cycling I broke my hip, so I am on crutches for the next few months. It was not a stroke related incident that caused me to break the hip.

Your employer should help with a phased return to work and if they are not very cooperative, you should check with your union.

Good luck and best wishes

John
